“. . . THEN TURN NOT PALE, BELOVED SNAIL,
BUT COME AND JOIN THE DANCE.” Lewis Carroll
Virginia Barton: aka Ginny, Gin. Born London, 1937, the third of four sisters. Blissfully happy childhood.
Father: Company Director.
Education: Posh London school, failed maths. O level & Latin. Regrets not having worked much. Sporty, bossy, greedy.
Career: Nursing, loved it, but not enough to finish the course when she fell in love with future husband. (Student nurses were forbidden to marry.)
Married, 4 children.
The lemons and cork trees in VB’s mother’s background, and the curlews and frankfurters in her father’s, had a profound influence on her character as she freely admits. Cosmopolitan.
Ginny’s third birthday. On that actual date her future husband was deported to Siberia.
Aged 10 she wrote and illustrated her one and only book, Seaboys Revenge.
A week after her 21st birthday, she was received into the Catholic Church.
And of course, The Wedding Day!
And birthdays, anniversaries, and the high holy days of Life.
Gin’s sister once described her as “Miss Norm 1953,” which just about sums her up.
