Today we step aside from Syria for a moment and allow “music to soothe the savage breast.”

We celebrate many hallowed customs every year: the Men’s Finals at Wimbledon; seeing in the New Year at Trafalgar Square or Edinburgh; almost anything to do with the Queen; Cup Final at Wembley; and many more of a regional nature.

Tonight, the Last Night of the Proms receives national television coverage and a night of fun is guaranteed for even the unmusical.

My Dad couldn’t sing a note (“I wouldn’t bother to try, Charles, if I were you” read his school report for singing) but even he enjoyed humming and tapping with the rest.
