22 November 2018: Fun

22 November 2018

The eminent Stephen Sondheim recently paid a short visit to London to see the new version of his musical, Company.

He gave and interview to BBC Radio4, during which he was asked if, considering his venerable age, he intended to continue working? (He was born in 1930.)

Sondheim replied that he had read the obituary of a mountaineer who was asked a similar question; why, at his considerable age, did he continue with such a dangerous sport as mountaineering?

“It doesn’t have to be fun to be fun.”

Mull this over when you feel like throwing in the towel when you hit 85.

I’m glad you’re a fan of Stephen Sondheim, Ginny. So am I. I heard that interview on Radio 4 and LOVE that quote about fun. It’s a useful arrow to have in the quiver, somehow. Apparently he’s writing a musical based on the Bunuel film “The Discreet Charm of The Bourgeoisie” —- sound like fun?

I shall immediately view the film which I don’t think I ever saw, Mrs Judd. Mind you, being almost as old as Sondheim, I just might have seen it and forgotten it! Gin
